Julian Robertson
About
Julian Robertson founded Tiger Management in 1980 and built it into one of the most influential hedge funds of its era, pioneering the modern long/short equity playbook.
Tiger's returns were extraordinary through the 1980s and 90s, though the fund famously struggled at the tail end of the dot-com bubble and closed to outside investors in 2000.
Robertson's most enduring legacy may be the "Tiger Cubs" — the generation of hedge fund managers who trained under him at Tiger and went on to run their own major funds. Few investors have shaped the industry's talent tree more.
- Own the best. Short the worst.
- Do the work. Fundamental research beats consensus over long stretches.
- Talent scales. Investing in and mentoring great people is itself an investment strategy.
From the record
Historical positions — for education, not a current portfolio.
- Tiger Management — one of the earliest institutional-scale long/short equity books: long the best businesses in an industry, short the worst.
