About

Jim Simons was an award-winning mathematician (Chern-Simons theory bears his name) who founded Renaissance Technologies in 1982 and built one of the most successful investment firms in history.

His Medallion Fund, run for employees only, is widely regarded as the best-performing hedge fund ever recorded — reportedly compounding at rates that were previously assumed to be impossible.

Simons's key insight was cultural as much as technical: staff Renaissance with scientists, physicists, and mathematicians rather than Wall Street veterans, and trust the data over intuition.

Famous principles
  • Hire scientists, not stock pickers.
  • Trust the data. If a pattern is real and repeatable, it will show up in the numbers.
  • Small edges, repeated with discipline, compound into extraordinary results.

From the record

Historical positions — for education, not a current portfolio.

  • No famous single picks by design — Medallion traded thousands of short-term systematic positions across markets. The portfolio was the algorithm.

Legacy

Simons proved that a team of scientists, armed with data and discipline, could outperform Wall Street. Modern quantitative investing is largely the world he built.
